Effect of Oral Prostaglandin E©ü on Urinary Retention after Gynecologic Operation

Abstract
The effect of prostaglandin E2 on the urinary retention in uterine cervical cancer was observed after radical hysterectomy. The subjects (15 patients) were selected among 29 patients who received the radical hysterectomy and showed no sign of urinary infection for 2 weeks after the operation. Prostaglandin was administered orally and its effect on urinary retention was compared between control and the treated group, and between before. and after prostaglandin treatment in the same patient. The effect of prostaglandin dosage was also observed.
Prostaglandin treatment shorten the days required for the residual urine volume to decrease to less than 100ml. The increase of prostaglandin dosage from 1.5mg to 3.0mg per day caused little difference on the prostaglandin effect. The prostaglandin effect appeared 5 days and reached to the maximum 7 days after the treatment (1.5~3.0mg prostaglandin per day for 7 days).
These results indicate that the prostaglandin treatment is effective for the urinary retention which occurred after the radical hysterectomy in uterine cervical cancer patients.
